How To Handle File I/O in C: Read, Write, and Append

One of the coolest things you can do through programming is to read, write, and append information to files. Once you know how to do this, you can store data from your program to a file and receive that data at a later time when you restart the program.

This is a foundational concept for beginner programmers towards understanding: Data management, Data file formats, and Databases.

Here are some quick examples of when reading, writing and appending to a file comes in handy:

  • To save program output
  • To save configuration settings that your program can save to and read when it starts
  • To log the flow of your program for debugging
  • To import and export data for processing: CSV and JSON
